Nyhavn canal at dusk, Copenhagen

Est. 1936

Our Story

"The canal outside has changed. The city has changed. But the warmth inside Nyhavn 17 has not."

What started as a tavern serving sailors and dock workers in 1936 has grown, generation by generation, into one of the most cherished places to sit, eat, and feel welcome in Copenhagen. The address has always been the same. The commitment to good food and honest hospitality has never wavered.

The warm, candlelit interior of Nyhavn 17

The Space

A Room That Remembers

Step inside and you step back — in the best possible way. Dark wood, soft light, the smell of good butter and fresh bread. Tables close enough that you feel the life of the room, far enough apart that you feel at ease.

The room has hosted anniversaries and first dates, birthday lunches and farewell dinners. It has fed writers, labourers, royalty, and tourists who wandered in on a rainy Tuesday. Everyone gets the same table.

History

Four Generations

1936

A Sailor's Tavern

Nyhavn 17 opens its doors as a modest tavern on the canal, serving the sailors and dock workers who made their living on the water. Simple food, honest drink, and a fire in the winter.

1970s–1980s

Nyhavn's Most Iconic Tavern Takes Shape

The second generation expands the kitchen and introduces a proper menu. European classics begin to share the table with Danish staples. The neighbourhood is changing, and so is the restaurant — but the welcome stays the same.

1990s–2000s

Nyhavn Finds Its Identity

As Nyhavn transforms into one of Copenhagen's best-loved destinations, so does the restaurant. The third generation refines the menu, deepens the wine list, and builds a reputation that stretches beyond the canal.

Today

Father & Son

The fourth generation is now at the helm. Father and son, side by side, keeping the tradition alive while remaining curious — about new ingredients, new ideas, and new guests arriving for the first time from every corner of the world.

What We Believe In

The Things That Don't Change

Good Ingredients

We cook with what's good. Seasonal produce, careful sourcing, and a respect for the things that grow in and around Denmark.

No Rush

A meal here is not an event with a clock on it. Stay for one course or four. Linger over the wine. Watch the canal. We're open until half past midnight for exactly that reason.

Everyone Welcome

From the first coffee of the morning to the last cocktail of the night. Whether you've been coming for thirty years or walked in ten minutes ago — you're welcome at Nyhavn 17.

Come and See For Yourself

We'd Love to Have You
